Part 2 of 4: Bayawan - Clean Water and Beyond

The Sanitation Health Department in Bayawan, Philippines went into acton to improve the living situation of the people. The mayor discusses health and created intitiatives with water supply as a primary health priority. He realized whaen one person is sick, it affects the whole family. In 2004, work began with a German company, German agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) to develop a WWTP. The modo was "closing the loop in waste water management and sanitation". It was recognized that sanitation is largely neglected thoughout the Philippines, and changes needed to happen. More than 30% of sicknesses are due to water related causes. They developed a pilot site for the 1st WWTP in the Philippines. It was decided to use a constructed wetland for treatment, spanning 3,000 square meters and treating 700 houses.
